Derelict 10: And Beyond

In 223 the Alliance received a distress beacon from the Port Shenset. A tiny colony of only 50,000 on the edge of Known Space. They sent details of a virulent plague that had already decimated two-thirds of their population, as well as a plea for aid. The virus responsible, now know as X02, is one of the most dangerous plague vectors known, it is highly contagiousness and mutates quickly baffling researchers for years. The Alliance declared the planet under maximum quarantine. No one was to travel to or from the planet until a cure for the plague could be found. It took the researches five years to find a way to eradicate the virus. By the time doctors arrived at Shenset, no one on the planet had survived to retrieve treatment. The quarantine was lifted and the planet resettled. All new immigrants are vaccinated against the virus should it return.

08-15-15_2-00 PMAmelia put the tablet down. She wasn’t sure how to feel. After all these years she’d finally knew what had happened. It hadn’t been easy. No one had heard of Shenset that she’d asked. And she hadn’t been ready to find out for a long time. But now…

“You finished? I can’t believe that they didn’t send anyone after they got that message. They would have found you then.”

“The virus must have scared them.” She understood that fear. The X-series viruses were always the most frightening. Plague-bringers.  The alliance had serious rules in place for how to treat cases. And severe punishments for those who broke them. She could have been mad at them. But, what good would that do? Revenge wasn’t what she wanted. That wasn’t why she had finally tried to figure out what happened.

“I knew everyone was gone when I left, but I had hoped…”08-15-15_2-08 PM-2

” You didn’t abandon them, Amelia. Never think that.”

“I don’t. But…there was a chance before. That they were still alive.” Silly thoughts, she knew. But there hadn’t been a time when she’d docked at a port and found herself looking around for a familiar face. Now, she knew that would never happen. She needed to let go of that hope.

Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. 08-15-15_2-09 PM-3

Those dark days were never too far from her. . She hadn’t been sure long it had been. Now she knew. It had three years. Three years of sadness, fear, loneliness beyond which she could even begin to process. How had she even survived? The day her parents stopped calling.08-15-15_12-46 PM 2

The loneliness had eaten away at her. The fear had paralyzed her.

Every day was a struggle. Just to wake up again, just to keep trying. To cut past the silence.

Even so, she had forced herself to move forward. To take care of herself.

To quiet the fears and the voices in her head.

She had made the only decision up to her that didn’t result in dying alone. It hadn’t been easy.

08-08-15_2-29 PM-2

But it had brought her here. And now she knew. It had been a good decision.

08-15-15_2-09 PM-2

She opened her eyes. Putting aside the hope and longing. Saying goodbye her family. She had a new life now.

“Gracie! Sam!” She called out standing up. “Time to go!”

The girls jumped up from the chess table quickly.

“We’re we are we going?” Gracie asked as they headed back home.

“To the Tighar, stoopid,” Sam mocked her sister playfully.

“No, I mean – ”

Amelia interrupted them and answered the question she knew Gracie had meant to ask. “We’ve got a delivery to make. Halfway across Known Space, are we all ready?”08-15-15_2-12 PM

The End

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it. I had so much fun writing it. I can’t wait to see what challenge I get to do next. I’ve got my eye on the Immigrant Challenge, the Minimalist Challenge, or the Off the Grid challenge as my next smaller challenge. Plus my writing is improving the more I write, so it’s a win-win-win situation for all!

  1. What a wonderful ending! It wrapped up all the loose ends and was really satisfying to read. How lovely is it that she has her own family now! And that she was successful in heading back to a place which is populated. I’m so happy that she’s able to truly live now. She deserves the best after all she’s been through.

Also, your creativity in interpreting the room challenge is astounding to me. What a stellar plot you came up with within the boundaries of this challenge! Very inspiring. 🙂

    • I’m glad it turned out so well myself. I spent half the challenge trying to figure out if someone would have come and get her or not, and if not, why didn’t anyone show up for three years….

But yes, I wanted to end this story properly so she has a lovely family with two adorable twin girls (named after her parents, btw). It only seemed right to bring her all the out in to the wide world in the end. She’s actually at the same station her parents met at in this post, but more because I didn’t want to have to build 2 stations.

  2. I was so excited to see one more post about the Tighar and Amelia. This was a great closure. And your creativity with this story, as everybody said, was great. I love sci-fi anyway… but this was so good, because of the details.

  3. So beautiful! Your Sims are stunningly beautiful. And, you know, there’s this peaceful loving quality that your Sims have–all of them, even Bane and Luthor and the other evils. It really shines through Amelia and her guy. And look how kids thrive in that environment! I think that’s why onez is so happy on your hard-drive!

  4. Aww, so sweet that she did get her closure and a happy ending after all. I also like that it’s not too unrealistically happy; I mean, her tragedy is still there and it still hurts, which makes a lot of sense. But it’s nice to see that she was able to recover for the most part and move on.

So yeah, you can probably guess that I really enjoyed this story! Thanks for writing it!

    • Thanks for reading it! (Especially over my lunch break so I could watch you and reply!)

And yes, there’s a ‘happy’ ending, although probably still plenty of drama in her life both from her past events and from future events. We never stop adapting to the world…I hope.

      • Wow, I got this weird time-travelly feel because it’s late in the evening already in this timezone. It’s weirdly fun to talk to someone in a different time even though it is just the time of day. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing what more drama Amelia’s life holds.

        • Ditto honestly! I have one idea about what happens next but it’s kind of like the short story prompts help direct the show the way the “room challenge” helped the first story.

And hope you’re having a lovely evening over there!

          • Thanks! I think I’ll grab yet another cup of tea before it’s too late (okay, it already is a bit late for the types of tea I have here in my university apartment but who cares). So my evening is pretty good. I hope you have a nice day too!

  5. Awwwww I love that Amelia has her own family now and some closure about why no one came for her. The sisters are adorable and I realized Grace was her mom, but didn’t catch Sam was her father! Perhaps because I was seeing the two girls and binge reading it all I may not have caught her dads nane!

I loved this story and how you really made a very creative story around what I understand can be a somewhat monotonous challenge!

    Thank you!!

  6. I loved this story so much! I love the world and backstory you created for Amelia, and how we don’t truly realise the extent of her situation until a few chapters in. It was amazing, and while I want to read more of Amelia’s world, I’m glad she mostly had a happy ending 😁

    • Thanks so much for reading! I really had no clear idea when I started how this would end but I was pleasantly surprised with the end. I’m glad the slow unfolding worked for you.
