Addictive Games

World of GooI am easily addicted to games. Especially computer games. For weeks on end, I will be consumed by that game and then I won’t play at all. Many games I come back to and relive the earlier addiction. Some games I am addicted to for only a couple days, others for several months. None of them last much longer than that.

The first computer game I ever played was the original Russian Tetris on our Mac plus. I enjoy playing tetris in any form even the Dr. Mario version with pills or the pyo-pyo Japanese tetris like game I bought for my DS. Although I must admit none live up to the difficulty of the first game’s level 10 or the wonderful Russian music it had.

Currently I like playing Solitare – the basic free Windows XP version. I play it Vegas style because then the games don’t last as long and it’s possible to play the game while the rest of the computer is trying to boot up. I’ve been addicted to Spider Solitare, Mindsweep, and Freecell as well.

Last week my game addiction was Plants vs Zombies. This game first got me during finals last winter (I got it cheap from Popcap for Halloween) and I played it constantly, on two different computers. As of last week I’ve gone through the adventure 3 times. Popcap has been a source of many of my most addictive games. Peggle’s graphic’s destroyed my video card on one laptop during a week-long playing fest. And Bejeweled was my first popcap game. Now I play it on facebook, one minute at a time (for several hours). I also have been addicted to Bookworm Adventures, but the game takes forever.

This week it’s World of Goo which I got from Steam. Little tiny ball of goo that join together to build bridges, chains, towers, etc. My tower is only 20 feet tall or so since it keeps falling, but I think my current construction will hold up much higher than my previous attempts. I need more goo balls and I still have to finish the last level.

I should really avoid open ended games like World of Goo, Plants vs Zombies, and RPG games and stick to time limited or card-limited games. Then I will spend less time playing and more time doing what I should be doing, like working, eating, or sleeping.

Your two cents,
